It has gotten complements from several top notch musicians. It has an “old” sound that I have not heard in any other banjo that I’ve played and I’ve played a few.

It is beautiful without being gaudy like some fancy banjos and has had almost 35 years to “vintage.” You can only imagine what it would cost to have a small builder today build you a banjo to these specifications. I'll be gently plucking away on this one and helping it play in for it's next owner until it sells. As far as I know this banjo has NEVER been taken apart and "tinkered with." Many of us pickers will tell you that giving a banjo time to "settle in" and "play in" contributes greatly to it's sound. Kershner tailpiece is highly adjustable and is currently set as Andy suggested in Banjo Newsletter. Cream colored binding on the resonator has vintaged nicely. Flange is almost perfectly even with the tapered wall resonator that has been painted black on the inside, all of which add to the projection of sound. Attention to beauty, detail, and set up is amazing. This has to be one of his finest and is top notch all the way. Each Dixie Grand was totally unique, there are no two alike. I’ve tried several bridges and this one sounds the best. I believe the bridge to be one of Andy’s original bridges. Andy expertly etched an Eagle onto the back of the resonator. Beautiful abalony binding adorns the neck. The hardware and tone ring is of unknown origin. The wood is highest quality flamed maple. Andy was not only a luthier he was first and foremost a great banjo player as well so he knew what a good banjo should sound like. He put banjos together from parts and did many pre-war conversions but he also hand made a few of the highest quality instruments that he called the “Dixie Grand.” He only made about a dozen or so of these banjos and many of them wound up in the hands of his relatives after his death. He quit cutting hair and turned his attention to full-time luthier work in 1974. Bill Harrell once referred to him as “the Rolls Royce of Repairmen" and Banjo Newsletter referred to him as "the Guru of the Five String Banjo." Crowe, and Little Roy Lewis not only knew him they also learned a few licks from this master classical banjo player and visited his shop often for his repair work and set up.Īndy’s work is well documented not just regionally but also nationally through articles in Banjo Newsletter and Bluegrass Unlimited. You might never have heard of Andy Boarman from Berkeley County, West Virginia but Bluegrass legends like Don Reno, J.C. I played it on Channel 11 in TN with a band I was with for a short while.
